چکیده

Stirred tanks and bubble columns are widely used as mixing essels and bioreactors. Average spatial fluid velocity gradients t the level of the eddies or the prevailing shear rate, is an imporant variable in bioreactors but is not easy to characterize. A nowledge of shear rate is essential for at least two main reasons: 1) shear rate influences the average apparent viscosity of nonewtonian fluids and hence affects power absorption, mixing haracteristics and mass transfer phenomena [1]; (2) microoranisms, bioflocs and other suspended solids are susceptible to amage that is dependent on the prevailing shear rate and assoiated shear stress [2,3]. The main equations for estimating average shear rate γ and he maximum shear rateγmax in the impeller zone of stirred tanks re summarized in Table 1 [2,3]. Most authors have correlated

Fluid dynamics and mixing behavior in orbitally shaken bioreactors for mammalian cell cultivation

Rationale and significance. Recombinant therapeutic proteins are frequently produced in mammalian cells cultivated in suspension in large-scale stirred tank bioreactors. There are three major drawbacks to stirred-tank bioreactors. First, they are expensive to purchase and maintain, limiting their availability to some potential users. Second, they have not been adapted to volumetric scales less ...

Optimization of Atropine Extraction Process from Atropa Belladonna by Modified Bubble Column Extractor with Ultrasonic Bath

Modified Bubble Column Extraction with Ultrasonic Bath (BCE-UB) method was used to extract atropine from the stem and leaves of Atropa belladonna. Optimum condition were obtained with Kamada solvent which was chloroform-methanol-ammonia 15:15:1(v/v/v) as extraction solvent, the particle size of  less than  350 µm, an extraction time of 23.95 min, a liquor to material ratio of 15.08 mL/g and...

Bioreactor scale-up and oxygen transfer rate in microbial processes: an overview.

In aerobic bioprocesses, oxygen is a key substrate; due to its low solubility in broths (aqueous solutions), a continuous supply is needed. The oxygen transfer rate (OTR) must be known, and if possible predicted to achieve an optimum design operation and scale-up of bioreactors. Many studies have been conducted to enhance the efficiency of oxygen transfer. The dissolved oxygen concentration in ...

High cell density cultivation of recombinant yeasts and bacteria under non-pressurized and pressurized conditions in stirred tank bioreactors.

This study demonstrates the applicability of pressurized stirred tank bioreactors for oxygen transfer enhancement in aerobic cultivation processes. The specific power input and the reactor pressure was employed as process variable. As model organism Escherichia coli, Arxula adeninivorans, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Corynebacterium glutamicum were cultivated to high cell densities. By applying...

New milliliter-scale stirred tank bioreactors for the cultivation of mycelium forming microorganisms.

A novel milliliter-scale stirred tank bioreactor was developed for the cultivation of mycelium forming microorganisms on a 10 milliliter-scale. A newly designed one-sided paddle impeller is driven magnetically and rotates freely on an axis in an unbaffled reaction vessel made of polystyrene. A rotating lamella is formed which spreads out along the reactor wall. Thus an enhanced surface-to-volum...
